Proof We Were There

Like many vacations, ours didn’t go 100% as planned. We set out to hit 13 National Parks. As you might have noticed above, we only have shots of us at 10 NP gates. But, we actually did get to 11. We just missed the sign in Kings Canyon NP. Whoops! If you followed us on twitter you know we cut our vacation short because Jeff’s mother had gone into the hospital. (Note: She is doing fine now.) We’ll get the other two next time 😉

Photos from our first week

This is just a snapshot of what we’ve experienced so far. Full details/more photos to come later. This trip is going great and it’s not even halfway over.

Scenes from the first few days

A few shots from the iPhone. Planned on updating more tonight but our laptop is dead and unfortunately so is our power source. Hopefully we’ll have better luck tomorrow night. The last several days have been everything we hoped for and more. Check out twitter.com/ournpadventure for more updates from our trip so far.

And we’re off

Are we there yet?

35 days to go.  Daydreaming continues. Some friends of ours are traveling to Yosemite next week and it got us wishing we were there. Anyone have any suggestions on non-touristy attractions in Yosemite? Someone mentioned Cathedral Beach. Leave a comment.

Map above was illustrated by Jo Mora in 1931. (I want to get a print for my office.)

Will Google maps replace traveling?

Never, but it’s pretty darn cool. Nothing can compare to feeling the mist coming off of a Bridalveil Falls, the smell of sulfur at Yellowstone, the sound of an owl outside your tent at night, or the taste of a Clif Bar partway through a hike. God’s amazing creations are best enjoyed from within, not behind a monitor. Am I right?

Google has now integrated its 3d “earth” feature into maps. Check it out.

Weekend Adventure: Falling Water Creek

Last weekend we made a trip to Northwest Arkansas. The Buffalo National River region has a significant place in our heart (click here to read why). But this time we voyaged past the Buffalo River into the Ozark National Forest. Over the last couple years we have used Tim Ernst’s Arkansas Waterfalls Guidebook to find the likes of Eden Falls and Hemmed-In Hollow Falls (the tallest waterfall in the midwest). This trip we sought out a series of waterfalls along Falling Water Creek.

More pictures after the jump.

New bikes & google bike maps

Just the other day Google announced that bike routes would become integrated into its current map tool. Add in two new bikes and this became some of the best news we’ve heard in awhile. In a town where we continually hear people complain about the lack of legitimate bike routes, this will at very least help us find the “safest” way around.
